C. 72
D. lxxx
Eastward. 120
NEW question from GMAT® Official Guide 2019
(PS00907)
Diverse ways..
1) 80% means fourscore out of 100, and then here lxxx is 100-eighty=20 less than 100
But we are looking for 16 less...
Difference is twenty, denominator is 100..
So when difference is xvi, denominator will exist \(\frac{100}{20}*16=eighty\)
2) allow numerator be X, and then denominator will be Ten+sixteen
And then \(\frac{10}{Ten+16}=\frac{eighty}{100}....100X=80X+16*80....20X=xvi*80....X=16*4=64\)
Therefore X+16=64+16=80..
3) commutation
Substitute denominator as per the choices and meet what corresponds to 80%
Always better to start with Heart value and then that you minimize your task..
If C<80% check for D and E
If C>lxxx%, bank check for B and A
If C=fourscore% that is your reply
C. 72
Fraction = \(\frac{72-16}{72}=56/72=7/9 < 8/10\)
So check for D
D. eighty
(fourscore-xvi)/80=64/80=8/x.. Yes
D

\(\frac{10}{x+sixteen}\) = \(\frac{eighty}{100}\) = 4/five
Cross Multiply to Get:
4x + 64 = 5x ---> x = 64
Denominator = x + 16 = 64 + xvi = 80

Alternate approach
If denominator of fraction is 10, we can evaluate the respond options and check which
of the fractions yield fourscore% | For denominator 10 -> \(\frac{x-16}{x}\) must be equal to \(\frac{4}{5}\)
A. \(32 = \frac{32-16}{32} = \frac{16}{32} = \frac{i}{2}\)
B. \(64 = \frac{64-16}{64} = \frac{48}{64} = \frac{iii}{iv}\)
C. \(72 = \frac{72-16}{72} = \frac{56}{72} = \frac{7}{9}\)
D. \(80 = \frac{80-xvi}{eighty} = \frac{64}{lxxx} = \frac{4}{five}\)
E. \(120 = \frac{120-16}{120} = \frac{104}{120} = \frac{thirteen}{15}\)
Therefore, Pick D(lxxx) is the value for the denominator of the fraction

nu is 10+xvi/10=iv/five (80%).
We go equation => five(x+16)=4x; 5x+80=4x; x=80

x/x+16 = iv/v
in that location denominator has to be a multiple of 5. A,B, and C are out
when denominator is lxxx i.e. when the ratio 4/5 is multiplied by sixteen. Numerator volition become 64. therefor the ratio will be 64/lxxx
Satisfies the condition. hence answer is D

We can create the equation:
n/(north + 16) = eight/ten
north/(n + 16) = 4/5
5n = 4n + 64
northward = 64
Thus, the denominator is 64 + sixteen = eighty.

Let Northward = the numerator
Permit D = the denominator
...the denominator is 16 greater than the numerator.
Nosotros can write: D = North + 16
If the fraction is equivalent to 80 per centum...
Nosotros tin write: Northward/D = 80/100
Simplify to become: N/D = 4/5
Cantankerous multiply to get: 5N = 4D
...what is the denominator of the fraction?
We at present take the post-obit system of equations
D = N + 16
5N = 4D
Take the top equation, and solve for N to become: N = D - 16
Now have the bottom equation and replace North with D - xvi to get: 5(D - 16) = 4D
Expand: 5D - 80 = 4D
Solve: D = lxxx
Respond: D
Thank you,
Brent

What are we solving for: The value of the Denominator
Value for Numerator: (due north)
Value for Denominator: (n+16)
(n)/(n+16) = 80/100
(north)/(northward+xvi) = 4/5
5n = 4(n+16)
5n = 4n + 64
n = 64
(64+ 16) = 80

lets try less math and more logic!
We know lxxx% = 4/5 --> the deviation between denominator and numerator is i.
We are said that the difference is sixteen.
So, if 1 is to 16,
Then 5 is to lxxx. Or,
i/16 = 5/x
x = fourscore
Happy studying.

This is a general issue that became credible in this trouble for me, merely I just spent WAY TOO LONG on this trouble considering no matter how many times I read and re-read the question, my encephalon kept inserting "xvi times greater" into the problem instead of the "16 greater". And the matter is, this is the second time I'thousand doing this trouble. I did this trouble in a first circular of studying months agone and I did the SAME Exact THING. Does anyone have any tips on how to just read the damn question correctly? It'southward insane. Re-reading and reading slowly don't seem to work.

Y'all have already highlighted the pattern to your trouble. If I were you, I would finish each time I run across something similar 'X is 5 greater than Y'
or something similar. One more than thing, try converting words into equation and that should assistance.
50 is ten times five.
=>l =(is) ten X(times) 5.
+>50 = 10X5.
Similarly, 10 is 5 greater than five.
10 = v + five
